Andre Berto has injured his left arm and will be requiring surgery and will be pulling out of his February 11th fight with Victor Ortiz. According to Victor Conte, Berto's strength and conditioning coach, Berto suffered a bicep tear during sparring. There is no timetable yet on how long the recovery time will be for Berto.
If Ortiz's camp still wants to fight soon, he may take a tune-up to stay active. There are some intriguing names out there that may be possible opponents.
First Golden Boy could look internally and find Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi's rumored bout with WBA welterweight titlist Vyacheslav Senchenko is off.
Other intriguing fighters as possible replacements: Lucas Matthysse is slated to fight on Feb 10th in Argentina but could theoritically take Ortiz on short notice. Juan Manuel Marquez is always available but he is trying to secure a bout with Lamont Peterson. And Peterson is still without a fight even though it seems as though the Amir Khan rematch is inevitable.
Of course, there's a long shot: Manny Pacquiao is still looking for an opponent.
This injury will come to a huge blow for boxing fans everywhere. The two battled in an action packed upset last year in a fight of the year type match.
